Yes, and on the Richmond Highway corridor the interesting part of that question is not whether halal food exists. It plainly does. This is one of the most internationally diverse stretches of road in Northern Virginia, and between Penn Daw, Hybla Valley and Groveton you can eat halal Afghan, Ethiopian, Pakistani and West African food within a mile of each other. What has been missing is halal Japanese. We are at 6676 Richmond Hwy. Here is what makes hibachi halal, and what to expect from ours.
The three things that decide whether hibachi is halal
Hibachi is a cooking method, not an ingredient. The answer is never about the hibachi. It is about the kitchen behind it. Three things disqualify most hibachi restaurants.
The meat.Chicken, beef and lamb have to come from a halal supplier and be slaughtered to halal standard. Most hibachi restaurants buy commodity meat and have no answer when you ask where it came from.
Pork on the premises.A restaurant serving pork gyoza or bacon fried rice is cooking it on the same flat top as your chicken. Even a kitchen with halal chicken cannot hand you a clean plate when there is pork six inches away on the same steel.
Alcohol in the sauce. This is the one almost nobody checks. Traditional teriyaki, eel sauce and many yum yum recipes are built on mirin or cooking sake. The meat can be perfectly halal and the sauce poured over it is not.
Flame clears all three. Every location serves a 100% halal menu. There is no pork anywhere in the building, so there is nothing on the grill to avoid. Our sauces are made in house rather than bought in, which is what lets us control what goes into them.
Those are also the three questions to ask anywhere else on this corridor: who supplies your meat, is there pork in the building, and what is in your teriyaki.
At our Alexandria location
We are at 6676 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22306, on the Route 1 corridor in the Hybla Valley and Groveton stretch. Mount Vernon is south of us, Huntington Metro is north, and Fort Belvoir is a short run down Richmond Highway. Beacon Hill, Penn Daw, Kingstowne and the Springfield side are all close.
Hours are Monday through Saturday 11AM to 10PM and Sunday 11AM to 9PM. Holiday hours can shift around Eid and the major public holidays, so the Google Business Profile is worth a look before a long drive.
This is a heavy pickup store. The Route 1 traffic pattern means most people order ahead, park for two minutes and go. If you want to eat in and watch the grill, the quieter window is mid-afternoon. Old Town Alexandria is about fifteen minutes north if you are coming from that direction.
Getting here, and the towns we serve
Richmond Highway runs straight past the door, which makes this a simple stop from most of the southern Fairfax corridor. Hybla Valley, Groveton, Penn Daw and Beacon Hill are minutes away. Mount Vernon is a short run south and Huntington Metro is close to the north. Fort Belvoir, Kingstowne, Springfield and Franconia are all inside fifteen minutes, and Old Town Alexandria is about fifteen north.
If you are coming from Arlington or Falls Church, our Seven Corners store is usually the quicker option.
Route 1 traffic is the main constraint here, not the kitchen. Most people at this location order online, park for two minutes and leave. Everything is cooked when the ticket comes in, so pre-ordering is what turns a Richmond Highway stop into something you can do on a commute rather than a plan you have to make.
What to order in Alexandria
Salmon and Shrimp Combo, $12.85. Two seafood proteins on one plate, and the one this store is known for.
Shrimp Tempura Roll, $7.85. Halal sushi at a price that makes it an add-on rather than a decision.
Matcha Milk Tea, $7.15. Ten boba toppings available, from crystal boba to lychee coconut jelly.
Chicken Hibachi, $9.85. The under-ten-dollar plate, two sides included.
How the plates are built: every hibachi comes with your choice of any two sides — fried rice, white rice, lo mein noodles or vegetables. Bento boxes arrive loaded already, with hibachi, vegetables, rice or noodles, a 4-piece California Roll, two dumplings and two spring rolls. Extra chicken is $2.95 and extra salmon, beef or shrimp is $3.95, which is usually the cheapest way to stretch one plate across two people. Individual sides run $2.95 to $4.95, and Yum Yum sauce is $0.50.
On Richmond Highway most orders leave the building rather than stay in it, so the bento and the combo travel best. If you are eating in, ask for the sides split rather than mixed, which holds better when the plate sits.
