North Baltimore County has a problem after 10PM, and everybody who lives here knows exactly what it is. The corridor between Towson and Hunt Valley empties out. What is left open is a short list of drive-thrus and a couple of bars, and if you need that food to be halal, the list gets shorter still.
We are at 10128 York Rd, Suite A, open until midnight Monday through Saturday and noon to midnight on Sunday. This is a guide to using those hours well.
Who is actually eating after 10PM here
Three groups, mostly, and they want different things.
Shift workers. The Hunt Valley office and industrial parks do not all run nine to five, and neither do the medical facilities south of here. This group wants a full hot meal, not a snack, and they want it in under fifteen minutes.
Students. Towson University is fifteen minutes south on York Road, and its off-campus housing spreads further north than the campus map suggests. This group orders in groups, splits the check, and cares about price per person more than anything else.
People coming off something. A game, a shift at a restaurant, a late train on the Light RailLink, a drive back down I-83. This group is not planning. They are looking at a map at 10:40PM to see what is still open.
What holds up late and what does not
Not everything is a good 11PM order. Some of it is a matter of physics.
Hibachi holds up. It is cooked on a flat top to order, it goes into a container hot, and it is still good twenty minutes later in a car. The Chicken Hibachi at $10.85 and the Steak Hibachi at $13.85 are both fine late.
Wings hold up best of all. They are the most forgiving thing we make, and they scale. Ten pieces at $15.99 is a meal, thirty at $40.99 is a room.
Loaded fries are a ten minute food. The Loaded Steak Fries at $11.85 are excellent and they are excellent for about ten minutes. If you are driving to Sparks, order something else.
Sushi is fine, with a caveat. The California Roll at $8.85 and the Dancing Shrimp Roll at $10.85 travel well. Order them to eat that night rather than tomorrow.
Boba is the underrated late order. Matcha Milk Tea at $8.15, Brown Sugar Milk Tea at $7.49, ten toppings to choose from. It is what people order instead of a soda when it is late and they do not want a coffee.
Fall makes the late hours busier
September changes this corridor. Towson is back in session. Friday night high school football across Baltimore County ends around 10PM and pushes a wave of hungry teenagers and parents onto York Road. Ravens Sundays run late in the afternoon and roll straight into evening. Weather gets good enough that Oregon Ridge and Loch Raven fill up on Saturdays and empty out at dusk.
Our last two hours go from the quietest of the day in July to among the busiest from September on. If you are ordering after 10PM on a Friday or Saturday this fall, putting the ticket in from the parking lot rather than at the counter is worth ten minutes.
The late-night order, by situation
One person, want a real meal. Chicken Hibachi, $10.85, with fried rice and vegetables. Two sides are included.
Two people, splitting. Chicken, Beef and Shrimp Combo at $15.85 plus a California Roll at $8.85. Under twenty five dollars, feeds two properly.
Four students, pooling. 20-Piece Wings at $28.99 in two flavors, one Fried Rice at $5.45, one Lo Mein at $5.45. Around ten dollars each.
Driving more than fifteen minutes. Wings and a bento. Skip the loaded fries.
Everything listed is halal. The entire menu is, at every location, with no pork served, stored or cooked on the premises and sauces made in our own kitchen rather than bought from a distributor.
